Justice for damages caused by climate change sought
KATHMANDU, NOVEMBER 18
The dire effects of climate change in Nepal have been portrayed in a documentary and exhibited in international platform for the first time.
Voices for Justice, a documentary prepared on the effects of climate change in all parts of Nepal's high mountains, central mountains and Terai, and its impact on women, children and the overall life of the people, was screened at the COP 27 General Conference in Egypt.
In the 27th Conference of Nations Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) held in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt, Nepal is raising the issue of damage and climate justice in various ways.
Moreover, this documentary made by the foundation was exhibited in a program organized by UNFCCC on Wednesday.
The documentary was also shown at the site event organized by ICIMOD and Rural Reconstruction Organization at the same convention.
Prajita Karki, the co-chairperson, said that the documentary highlighted the damages caused by climate change in the high mountains, hills, Terai and Madhesh regions of Nepal.
The issue of loss of snow in the mountains including the highest peak Everest, the damage caused by the melting of thick glaciers, floods and landslides, and the damage to property and crops by unseasonal rains have been included in the video.
Last year on March 8, fourty women leaders from various fields had trekker to Kalapathar, Everest base camp. The documentary, along with the depiction of effect of climate change, includes the heart wrenching scenes of floods and landslides in Helambu and Melamchi areas of Sindhupalchok, and the damage caused by the rains in Dolpa this year.
The documentary was produced in coordination and collaboration with the Ministry of Forestry and Environment, Nepal Tourism Board, and Nature Conservation Fund.
After the screening, participants from around the world discussed about compensating for the ill effects of climate change, and means to deliver justice in Nepal.
This documentary is written and directed by senior journalist Balkrishna Basnet. Director Basnet and Dr Siddharth Bajacharya represented Nepal at the forum.
