DHANKUTA, APRIL 4

The wildfire that spread at Chuliban forest in Dhankuta has destroyed two houses and put 20 other houses at high risk. The fire had spread in the forest last night and entered the human settlement.

Chief District Officer Basudev Dahal said two houses were destroyed and more than two dozen houses were at high risk.

He said the wildfire had spread from Tokana area of Dhankuta Municipality putting at risk a Magar settlement and its surroundings as it could spread to the human settlement at any time. Dahal said nine fire engines from Morang, Jhapa, Tehrathum and Sunsari were used to bring the fire under control.

Police said cowsheds belonging to Dhan Bahadur Poudel and Indra Bahadur Rasaili were destroyed in the blaze.

Locals have left their houses and reached safer areas after the fire spread uncontrollably. The fire could not be brought under control even though the Nepali Army, Armed Police Force, Nepal Police, and locals were deployed.

Ward 7 Chairman Janga Bahadur Rai said that more destruction was recorded due to the wind.
